I am not sure if I should be happy when companies merge. Is it a win-win situation when a larger company merge with a smaller company? Who won bigger time with the two?

As an employee who's company was bought by another company and after 2 years was merged with a bigger company, I personally believe that the two transitions were not in favor of the employees. Our new company today is worst. Some benefits were removed. I hope that the Closet Tailors and Office Environments will be successful in the Asheville community. Plus, the employees should have a better life because of the buy out.

It's good to see that there are some centres of good beer brewing there in the U.S.A.
The general impression of the state of American beer brewing is that there are only about three breweries and that they produce beer that is not much better than water.

Great idea! Love Ashville Area, very eclectic and sure there are some great part time tradesman and handymen there to connect up with. We do something similar in Atlanta, GA and are always really excited to see other handyman services / bulletin boards helping people get the things they need done and they can afford to do them. We'll keep checking this blog and keep rooting for small, american business start-ups like jobbitz that make good sense and provide value to us as consumers :-)

Hi Jeff,

As a staff member for the MPO, I really appreciate your interest in covering the MPO and spreading the word about its activities. Getting coverage in blogs such as this one is indispensable to us in terms of educating the public about the MPO and soliciting their ongoing input into our activities. With that said, there are a couple of items in this blog entry that I feel the need to clarify for you and your readers.

First, the meeting on March 18th was not a meeting of the policy-making board, or Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC), which is made up of elected and appointed officials and takes final action on behalf of the MPO, it was the Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC) which is made up of staff of local governments, transit agencies, and NCDOT and advises the TAC on matters coming before them. The TAC generally meets one week after the TCC and at that time votes on whether to take any formal action on the TCC’s recommendations. They will be meeting today, March 24, at 12:30 pm at Land-of-Sky Regional Council.

Second, the exercise in which the TCC and TAC members will be ranking their top 25 projects is part of the development of the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), a federally-mandated document that the MPO must develop every 5 years which provides a fiscally constrained, multi-modal vision for transportation in the metro area with a minimum 20 year planning horizon. According to federal law, the LRTP is the document from which the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program (MTIP) is to be developed and then incorporated into the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). It is not related to a request from NCDOT or to the current economic struggles. I would also like to note that we are soliciting input from the public in this process as well, and that there is a public version of the form available on our web site, www.fbrmpo.org, where interested citizens can choose 5 of their top overall transportation projects for the region over the next 25 years and answer a few other questions to help inform choices in the LRTP.

Finally, in regard to SB 758, I would like to note again that only the TAC can take formal action on behalf of the MPO. The TCC did vote to instruct staff to draft a resolution for consideration by the TAC. However, not all members of the TCC indicated blanket opposition to the bill. One TCC member indicated concern that counties were jumping to conclusions about the bill and several other members indicated that if adequate funding were attached it might not be a bad thing. It’s a complicated issue, but I don’t think it’s quite accurate to say that “all MPO members stood unified” when there was some debate among the committee, plus this was not actually the policy board but rather the technical committee.

Again, I thank you for your efforts in trying to make a rather confusing subject accessible to the public and I hope you will continue to observe and report on the MPO meetings and provide feedback to us on how we can make them as accessible and comprehensible as possible. I just wanted to clear up those couple of items, and make your readers aware of the opportunity to submit their input into the very important LRTP process. We will be collecting project prioritization surveys from the TAC and TCC, the public, and environmental resource agencies from today through Sunday, April 11 to help inform the next step in the LRTP development process.
