The
Asheville Chamber is back in Raleigh representing the voice of Western North
Carolina business. The General Assembly was very busy today and many familiar
faces were seen in the halls with it being Tourism Day at the NCGA.The Chamber
is eager to support our tourism community in Asheville as it plays such a key
role in the mountain economy.
However,
the NCGA was busy on many other fronts as well. The House Health Committee met
this morning and passed the bill blocking the expansion of Medicaid with a 16-7
vote. The bill will now go to the House floor for approval.
On
a less partisan note, the House passed HB 8 (constitutional amendment for
eminent domain) with a 110-8 vote. This bill would ad eminent domain language
to the NC Constitution.
The
Senate was also busy as they took up and debated HB 4. This legislation is
often referred to as the Unemployment Insurance bill. The bill passed its
second reading with a vote of 36-13 and will have its third reading tomorrow.
On
another note, Governor McCrory announced he will be adding an Assistant
Secretary of Manufacturing. This will be the first time this position has
existed in NC and demonstrates the importance manufacturing plays in our
economy.
The
Chamber will continue to keep you informed on the happenings at the NCGA.
