PetSmart Charities® Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Training Center funded
by PetSmart Charities® and the ASPCA
will quadruple training opportunities for
veterinarians,
veterinary students and spay/neuter professionals
WHO:
Many people in Asheville know Humane Alliance operates a
regional spay/neuter clinic and works with animal shelters from 20 counties in
Western North Carolina to transport dogs and cats for surgery in addition to
spaying/neutering 23,000 pets annually. This equates to 120 pets per day, thanks to the highly
skilled surgical techniques they have developed.
What not everyone knows is Humane Alliance also operates the
only international training campus in the world for high-volume, high-quality
spay/neuter surgical protocols and techniques. Veterinarians and veterinary
students have traveled to this training center from all over the U.S. and seven
countries, including Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Switzerland to learn
these surgical techniques and process.
Improved
and quicker techniques mean dogs and cats spend less time under anesthesia. It
also means they can spay/neuter more dogs and cats daily, in order to combat shelter
pet overpopulation problems. 137 spay/neuter clinics from across the U.S. and
Canada have trained, resulting in nearly 3,900,000 dogs and cats fixed at the
end of 2013.
344 veterinary students and 450 private
veterinarians have completed the training.
WHAT:
Humane Alliance is quadrupling their private veterinary and veterinary extern training programs to be able to train 855 professionals annually with a new 12,400 sq. ft. training center which has 6 surgical training suites, classrooms for learning and kennel space for 150 patients, thanks to funding from PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). Also on campus is a 2,200 sq. ft. dormitory which can house up to 20 students at a time.

There will be brief remarks at 10:30am by PetSmart
Charities, the ASPCA, Humane Alliance, the Mayor of Asheville, Buncombe County
Commissioners and Home Trust Bank followed by a ribbon cutting and tours of the
new facility along with a band and appetizers. Attendees are expected from
local animal welfare agencies with adoptable animals as well as trainees from
across the country who have trained at Humane Alliance.
