New obstetrics and gynecology providers coming to Jackson, Swain and Macon counties as Mission Women's Care Sylva

Mission Health is pleased to announce the opening of a new, woman-centric obstetrics, gynecology, and midwifery practice in Sylva and Bryson City.

Elizabeth A. England, MD, has joined Mission Health and Mission Medical Associates, effective Aug. 4. Dr. England currently sees patients from the Mission Angel OB/GYN & Family Practice office located on Mission Health’s Angel Medical Center campus at 190 Riverview Street, Suite 2, in Franklin, which provides her the opportunity to offer much needed additional obstetrics and gynecologic care to the Western counties of our region.  The Mission Women’s Care office at 470 Center St. in Bryson City is scheduled to open in mid-September. The Mission Women’s Care Sylva office is set to open this fall.

Dr. England is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and the James H. Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee, a program that focuses on providing care to rural communities. She later completed her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville. Dr. England’s personal care philosophy places an emphasis on patient-centered, compassionate care and minimally invasive surgery.

To provide the most complete range of obstetric and gynecologic services, Dr. England will be joined this fall by three certified nurse midwives (CNM) under the practice name of Mission Women’s Care. Working in close collaboration with OB-GYN physicians, CNMs offer a holistic approach to women’s care. The three CNMs joining Mission Women’s Care Sylva are Anne Karner, Judi Layton and Cynthia Noland, all previously affiliated with Smoky Mountain OB-GYN and long-time practitioners in the Sylva area. They will continue to serve the community as they have been while now being connected with the larger Mission Women’s Health team of providers serving western North Carolina.  The inclusion of these talented CNMs by Mission Women’s Care will allow the new local practice to offer a spectrum of care and an ideal blend of personalized services close to home and immediate access to world class sub-specialists, technology and facilities when needed.

“Reaching into the places that need increased access to care – our rural communities – is very important to Mission, and to those in the field of women’s services,” said Kellett Letson, MD, Mission Women’s Health Medical Director. “This team will serve new and growing families at one of the most important times in their lives. We are honored to be a part of that special moment.”
Building on Mission’s BIG (GER) Aim of getting each patient to the desired outcome, first without harm, also without waste and with an exception experience for the patient and family, Mission Women’s Care Sylva will bring the right care at the right place and at the lowest cost to women who need specialized care.

“I’m delighted that we are able to expand our services in the Sylva area with the addition of a dynamic new group of professionals who will become Mission Women’s Care Sylva,” said Susan Mims, MD, Vice President for Women’s Services at Mission Health. “The community will be served well by this very special combination of practitioners.”
