After 20 months of work by volunteers, Habitat partner families and staff, 17 homes are officially complete in Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s subdivision in Swannanoa, in the Beacon Mill area off Dennis Street. Habitat will celebrate the completion of the neighborhood and dedicate the final four homes on Tuesday, December 9that 3:30pm at the subdivision.
The event, called “Let Us Gather”, is open to the public and
media and will include the dedication of the Sweet Home Swannanoa House, two homes built by an anonymous donor, and
a house built in recognition of support from Buncombe County. There will be a
short program and then the dedicated homes will be open for visits.
The families who purchase these homes are required to go
through Habitat’s rigorous homeownership process. Each family contributes at
least 200 hours of sweat equity (200 hours per adult and 50 per child age
16-17), including homeownership classes and volunteering on the jobsite and in
the Habitat ReStore. Homeowners repay a 30-year, interest free mortgage to
Habitat. The non-profit uses mortgage payment income to build more safe and
affordable homes.
Please note: Moving forward, Habitat will continue to hold multiple-house
dedications like this one (quarterly), rather than the more frequent,
individual house dedications of past years.
