A Streetcar Named Desire Gets Its ACT Debut: Blanche DuBois is an attractive but fading Southern belle who arrives at the New Orleans apartment of her sister Stella and her husband, the brutish and sensual Stanley. Conflicts build between the three in the small, steamy apartment, with Stanley becoming increasingly cruel and violent. As a result, Blanche’s already tenuous ability to separate reality from illusion becomes gossamer thin. This is the first production of A Streetcar Named Desire in Asheville Community Theatre’s 69 year history. A Streetcar Named Desire runs April 17-May 3, 2015 with performances Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Youth Production Class Presents Seussical, Jr.: Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and everyone’s favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical, Jr., a fantastical musical extravaganza. Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” This production is performed by a class of students ranging in age from 7 to 13. Performances are Friday, April 3 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00.

Auditions for The Great American Trailer Park Musical: Auditions for The Great American Trailer Park Musical will be held April 6-7, 2015 from 6:00-9:00 pm at Asheville Community Theatre. This small cast musical features a cast of 7.  Auditions are open to all in the community, no previous experience required. Be prepared to sing 16 bars of music and bring sheet music to the audition in the key in which it will be sung. We will provide an accompanist. Directed by Mark Jones with musical direction by John Crawley.

Auditions for Humble Boy: The Autumn Players will hold auditions for the quirky comedy Humble Boy on April 7, 2015 from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm.  Humble Boy will be performed as reader’s theatre. Auditions are open to all in the community, no previous experience required.  All audition material is provided at the auditions. Scripts are available for check out at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office (refundable deposit of $10 required).

Saturdays at ACT presents Happily Ever After: On April 18, 2015, Bright Star Touring Theatre returns to headline Asheville Community Theatre’s Saturday family series with Happily Ever After.  This fairy-tale inspired production brings to life some of Grimm Brothers’ greatest hits including “Rapunzel,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Rumpelstiltskin” and “The Elves and the Shoemaker.” Loaded with audience participation and an endless stream of laughs! Performance begins at 10:00 am. All tickets are $5.00 and are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, by phone at 828-254-1320 or in person at the ACT Box Office.

The Autumn Players’ Readers Theatre Showcase Series Presents Humble Boy: In this rich, quirky comedy Felix Humble, a brilliant, insecure Cambridge astrophysicist, comes home for his father’s funeral; there he discovers not only that his mother, Flora, has disposed of her husband’s beloved bees, but also that she has long been having an affair with George Pye, a family friend—with whose daughter, Rosie, Felix was once involved. Playwright Charlotte Jones captures both the humor and the pathos of family life and the often convoluted, multi-textured, bittersweet relationships between parents and their adult children. Performances are Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25, 2015 in 35below at Asheville Community Theatre and Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Reuter Center on the campus of UNCA.  All performances begin at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $6.00 (includes NC Sales Tax) and are available at the door.

Storytelling series Listen to This: In the vein of “The Moth” or “This American Life,” Listen to This features stories and original songs from locals. April’s installment will be presented on April 30, 2015 at 7:30 pm in 35below. Hosted by Tom Chalmers. Tickets are $15.00.
