Mars Hill University hosts "Winter's Tune: Music to Warm an Appalachian Night" - Dec. 4th

 

Advance tickets are now on sale for a special evening of traditional mountain music December 4, 2015, at 7 pm in Broyhill Chapel on the campus of Mars Hill University. The concert, called Winter's Tune: Music to Warm an Appalachian Night, is hosted by the Liston B. Ramsey Center for Regional Studies.

The concert will feature local musicians, with a focus on female fiddlers of the region, including Whitewater Bluegrass with Danielle Bishop, Zoe and Cloyd with Natalya Weinstein, Midnight Plowboys with Emma Best, Rhiannon and the Relics, with Rhiannon Ramsey, Dona Cavanagh, Kathryn Parham Brickey, Lillian Chase and the New Potatoes, Bailee Brandon, and the Buckner Family featuring Carly Mae Buckner.

According to Hannah Furgiuele, who directs the event, Winter's Tune began last year as a fundraiser for the Roger Howell Documentary Project. There was such a positive response from the musicians and the audience, she said, that the Ramsey Center chose to host the concert for a second year.

"I am really pleased that we are able to do this event again," Furgiuele said. "Last year's musicians loved the intimate setting of Broyhill Chapel, and the sold-out audience left with smiles and holiday cheer.  My hope is that as we continue to offer this seasonal show, we will showcase different aspects of the rich musical tradition that is so central to cultural heritage in Western North Carolina.”

Natalya Weinstein of Zoe and Cloyd said, “I'm really looking forward to playing at Winter's Tune, especially because three of the young female fiddlers are former students.  I'm so proud of all the young women playing the fiddle in our region; what a rich musical tradition to carry on!"

Advance tickets are $15. Tickets at the door will be $18. Proceeds from the concert will support the Bascom Lamar Lunsford "Minstrel of Appalachia" Festival, hosted annually by Mars Hill University.
