Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths
among women, exceeded by only lung cancer, according
to the American Cancer Society. While
one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, the
survival rates are increasing due to early detection.
Please join Park Ridge Health on October 4 at 11 a.m. We
will meet at the Main Hospital Entrance the front lawn of the hospital to
launch the Pledge to Screen challenge to the Park Ridge Health team and
our community. We will be pledging
support for monthly self-breast exams and regular mammography screenings. Large pink ribbon posters will be available
for all to sign.
The Pledge to Screen initiative also provides
information on how to accurately perform a self-breast exam, establishment of a
baseline mammogram at the age of 40 unless there is a family history of the
disease, and a push for women to screen annually.
According to Linda Richards, Park Ridge Health Cancer Services
Director, early detection can be one of the most critical factors in reducing
breast cancer deaths. “It’s great to
show your spirit for fighting this disease, but much more compelling to pledge
and commit to routine screening for your breast health,” said Richards.
During the month of October, the public is encouraged to
take part in several events, including a Park Ridge Health Education Series
Lunch & Learn, featuring breast health awareness and cancer prevention
information from Park Ridge Health surgeon, David Onofrey, MD, FACS, Member,
American Society of Breast Surgeons. Park Ridge Health is also hosting three
Ladies’ Night Out events at its Imaging Centers located at the Park Ridge
Health Main Hospital Campus, Park Ridge Health Laurel Park and Park Ridge
Health South Asheville.
