Make it a day on...not a day off - honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service

Hands On Asheville-Buncombe, together with Land-of-Sky Regional Council Senior Corps programs, will coordinate a special MLK Inter-generational Day of Service in honor of Dr. King on January 21st from 9am-12noon. The event will include multiple stations where volunteers can participate in projects that directly support local nonprofits.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to create:

·         simple no-sew fleece blankets for Project Linus clients
·         bookmarks to be inserted in donated books distributed by the POP Project
·         “adopt me” bandanas for Asheville Humane Society’s shelter pets
·         math skills flashcards/games for Asheville City School elementary students
·         handcrafted cards of encouragement for local Veterans and more.

This is a family-friendly volunteer opportunity and participants are also invited to bring canned food items that will be donated to Manna Foodbank.

How Does Service Fit With the MLK Holiday?
The King Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems.

·         Strengthening Communities: Dr. King challenged individuals to take action to lift up their neighbors and strengthen their communities through service.
·         Empowering Individuals: Acts of service can help others lift themselves up no matter what their circumstances, and it does so much for those who serve as well.
·         Bridging Barriers: Serving side by side, community service bridges barriers of inequality between people and teaches us that in the end, we are more alike than we are different.
