JEFF VANDERMEER READING & SIGNING
We got Ann Vandermeer in April, now we get Jeff in July!
His Southern Reach Trilogy, which began with Annihilation, has already earned
him comparisons to writers as diverse as Atwood, Lovecraft, Borges, and H.G.
Wells. The second book, Authority, just came out and the final book,
Acceptance, will arrive in September (but you can pre-order from us now). A
staff favorite, Vandermeer is the author of Wonderbook, The City of Saints
& Madmen, and many others, and often collaborates with his wife, Ann.
Recently they co-edited The Time Traveler's Almanac.
Jeff has won the World Fantasy Award three times.

WRITING WORKSHOP WITH ANNIE FAHY
This workshop will use elements from the AWA method
described in Writing Alone and With Others by Pat Schneider, and has been
adapted worldwide to groups of writers and non-writers to build individual
skill, creativity, and to nurture writing voice and craft. Annie will
write along with the group to create a safe, honest, and non-hierarchical space
for new work. Accomplished and beginning writers learn from one another in
a generous atmosphere of both critical craft and personal respect for the value
of every voice.

The follow up to Suzanne Palmieri's debut novel The Witch
of Little Italy, The Witch of Belladonna Bay unfolds in Alabama as Palmieri

JEREMY B. JONES: APPALACHIAN CULTURE THROUGH SONG &
MEMOIR Jeremy Jones explores the culture and history of the Blue Ridge
Mountains through song and reading. Performing old-time banjo tunes and reading
excerpts from his book Bearwallow: A Personal History of a Mountain Homeland,
he presents the sounds and stories of his native Appalachian mountains in a
blending of personal narrative and folklore. Ron Rash (Nothing Gold Can Stay)
calls Bearwallow "a deeply satisfying memoir" and Robert Morgan (The
Road from Gap Creek) says Jones's prose is "vivid and fresh."

DOUGLAS STEVENSON OF THE FARM DISCUSSION & SIGNING In
1971, over 300 hippies left San Francisco in 60 school buses to found The Farm
Community on 1750 acres in Tennessee. Today it is the largest, and one of the
most successful, radical endeavors to blossom from the counter culture. Many of
the children born on The Farm, delivered by the community's midwives, chose to
strike out on their own and settle in Asheville, a place in sync with their
values and with a strong sense of community. Join author and founding Farm
member Douglas Stevenson, along with his son Jody and other members of The
Farm's second generation, for a lively discussion on the importance of
community in our lives. Stevenson is the author of The Farm Then & Now and
Out to Change the World and was recently a featured speaker at the Mother Earth
News Fair.

Author Virginia Pye follows a missionary family in early
20th century China in her debut novel, River of Dust. Annie Dillard (Pilgrim at

beautiful, deep book." Pye's fiction and essays can be found in The North
American Review, The Tampa Review, and The Rumpus, among others.
She has worked with the literary organization James River

A Plunder of Souls, the third in D.B. Jackson's popular

Malaprop's is thrilled to welcome Matthew Sanford, inspirational speaker and
yoga teacher, back to Asheville. Drawing upon his book, Waking: A Memoir
of Trauma and Transcendence, he explores how one's personal story can become an
agent for change, not just for oneself but for the world as well. Matthew is
the founder of the non-profit organization Mind Body Solutions, whose mission
is to transform trauma, loss and disability into hope and potential by
awakening the connection between mind and body.
