DWT welcomes Irish music greats Liz Carroll, John Doyle and Billy McComiskey - April 22

Three of the world’s most highly acclaimed artists in Irish music — Liz Carroll, John Doyle, and Billy McComiskey — come together in a must-see rare performance of impeccable, exquisite musicianship and evocative songmanship, Saturday, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. at Diana Wortham Theatre in downtown Asheville.

Liz Carroll and Billy McComiskey, both National Heritage Award Fellows, and Grammy nominated John Doyle (and current National Heritage Award Fellowship nominee) are undoubtedly three of the most acclaimed artists in Irish music today. Friends and musical compatriots for many years, the trio represents the pinnacle in Irish music. It is a rare musical opportunity when they come together, one not to be missed.

Generally acknowledged to be America’s finest Irish fiddler, Liz Carroll’s playful and expressive fiddling, as well as her massive original repertoire, has made her a living legend worldwide. She was the youngest artist ever awarded the nation’s highest folk honor. Carroll is also a prolific composer of tunes, many of which make it into traditional canon.

John Doyle is one of the most in demand artists performing in Irish, folk, and Americana music today, and is considered the most influential Irish guitarist living today. Also known for his original songwriting and evocative singing, his unmistakable guitar chops have graced over 130 recordings of Celtic, English folk, Americana, Bluegrass and Oldtime music. Now an Asheville resident, Doyle has toured worldwide for 25 years with innumerable luminaries in folk genres, including as music director and guitarist for Joan Baez and guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter.

A 2016 National Heritage Award Fellow, Billy McComiskey has long been a revered favorite among the traditional Irish music community for his recognizable, dynamic and driving button accordion playing. McComiskey is known on both sides of the Atlantic as an indefatigable session player, teacher, and promulgator of the music.
