"The Other Mozart" presented at Diana Wortham Theatre - March 15 & 16

DISCOVER THE REST OF THE STORY: WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART’S REAL-LIFE SISTER “NANNERL” IS THE OTHER MOZART

Diana Wortham Theatre in downtown Asheville presents The Other Mozart, the true, untold story of Maria Anna Mozart, Wednesday & Thursday, March 15 & 16 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the weeklong festival, Asheville Amadeus. The sister of Wolfgang Amadeus, nicknamed “Nannerl,” was a prodigy, keyboard virtuoso, and composer in her own right who performed throughout Europe with her younger brother to equal acclaim. Yet Nannerl was overshadowed by Wolfgang Amadeus, and her story faded away, lost to history.

Maria Anna (called Marianne and nicknamed Nannerl) was – like her younger brother – a child prodigy. The children toured most of Europe (including an 18-month stay in London in 1764-5) performing together as “wunderkinder”. There are contemporaneous reviews praising Nannerl, and she was even billed first. Until she turned 18. A little girl could perform and tour, but a woman doing so risked her reputation. And so she was left behind in Salzburg, and her father only took Wolfgang on their next journeys around the courts of Europe. Nannerl never toured again.

Not to be deterred by history, actress Sylvia Milo, the production’s creator and performer, brings Nannerl to life in this fascinating and intelligent performance, featuring a stunning 18-foot gown with exterior corset, representative of the social restrictions in which Nannerl was captive. Period style movement directed by Janice Orlandi creates a world of opulence and elegance through articulate delicacy of expressive balletic gestures, reverent court bows, and fan language. Directed by Isaac Byrne, The Other Mozart is based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family’s humorous and heartbreaking letters.

Along with music composed by her famous brother and Marianna Martines (a female composer who inspired Nannerl), original music was written for the performance by Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen (of Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, the International Contemporary Ensemble and BAM) for the instruments Nannerl knew intimately, such as clavichords, music boxes, and bells, as well as teacups, fans, and other ordinary objects that might have captured her imagination.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart repeatedly wrote that nobody played his keyboard music as well as Nannerl could, and their father Leopold described her as “one of the most skilful players in Europe” and that she improvises “so successfully that you would be astounded,” yet Nannerl’s virtuoso was sublimated.

The Other Mozart had a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run in NYC in 2014. The production has toured extensively in Europe (at the Mozart Wohnhaus and the Neue Residenz in Salzburg, at the Pasinger Fabrik in Munich, and in Estonia and Tyrol), in Toronto, and in the U.S. (Cherry Lane Theater and Lotos Club in NYC, RVCC in NJ, the Berkshires, Alabama, CT, TX, FL, Charleston, New Orleans, Kingston, and San Diego). In September 2016, the play was presented at St. James Theater in London to critical acclaim.

Enhance your experience: Pre-show discussions, led by noted composer and percussionist Nathan Davis, will be held in conjunction with these performances. Nathan Davis's recent album, On The Nature of Thingness, composed with Phyllis Chen (who also composed music for The Other Mozart), recently won the Independent Music Award for Best Contemporary Classical Album. These pre-performance discussions are presented by Diana Wortham Theatre on stage at 7:00 p.m. prior to the 8:00 p.m. performances, and are free to ticket holders.

Asheville Amadeus: These performances are part of Asheville Amadeus, a ten-day festival March 10-19, 2017, celebrating the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Organized by the Asheville Symphony, this biannual festival includes events throughout the city of Asheville; the inaugural festival in 2015 comprised more than 65 public and private events and performances and drew more than 20,000 people to festival events.

The Other Mozart’s Asheville performances are made possible by Performance Sponsors Nancy Houha and WNC Hearing and Audiology; and by Mainstage Theatre Series sponsors Bank of America and Merrill Lynch; with additional support by Media Sponsors The Laurel of Asheville and WCQS 88.1FM.

The entrance for the Diana Wortham Theatre is marked by the location of the theatre’s marquee between 12 and 14 Biltmore Avenue. Patrons enter the theatre through the breezeway between Marble Slab Creamery and White Duck Taco, and into a large interior courtyard with multiple glass doors which lead to the theatre’s lower lobby and box office. The intimate theatre seats just over 500 and boasts exceptional acoustics and sightlines, making it the premier performance space in Western North Carolina. The Mainstage Series is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency. The Mainstage Series 2016/2017 Season Sponsors are the Asheville Citizen-Times, Blue Moon Water, Creative Energy, 67 Biltmore Downtown Eatery & Catering, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Renaissance Asheville Hotel.

Asheville Amadeus Festival returns March 10-19

The Asheville Symphony announces the return of the Asheville Amadeus festival, March 10-19,
2017. Internationally renowned Grammy Award-winning violinist Midori is the festival’s headlining soloist and artist-in-residence. The popular 2015 week-long festival has been expanded in 2017 to a 10-day festival inspired by Mozart’s life and music.

The 2017 festival involves more than a dozen community partners and is a community-wide event including casual and formal concerts with complementary theatrical productions, lectures, comedy, a masterclass, a chorus singalong, an Austrian Wine flight night, and even a signature beer from Highland Brewing Company.

Midori’s time in Asheville is part of her Orchestra Residencies Program. Because of Midori’s dedication to the support and nurturing of young musicians, the festival will explore music as a culture of mentorship. During her residency, Midori will present a schedule of performances, education programs, collaborations with community partners, and social events.

“Without any doubt Midori has reached the highest echelon of the classical world, yet what makes  her unique is her commitment and passion to sharing her love for great music with young people,” says Asheville Symphony Music Director Daniel Meyer. “Not content to simply fly into town and show off her technical wizardry on the violin, Midori has made it her life's mission to connect great music with people eager to learn about what makes music so special among the arts. Her collaboration with the Asheville Symphony in this Asheville Amadeus festival will have
her unmistakeable stamp on it, largely because she has indeed taken the lead in what she would like to do and with whom she would like to collaborate.”

The festival culminates with the Asheville Amadeus finale concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 19 with Midori performing alongside the Asheville Symphony Orchestra and the Asheville Symphony Chorus under the direction of ASO Music Director Daniel Meyer at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.

“Asheville Amadeus has become special through this unique contact between top-flight artists like Emanuel Ax and Midori and our community,” says Meyer. “It is also special among music festivals in that we seek to connect with all of our artistic counterparts and provide experiences that complement and enhance what audiences will ultimately experience at the grand finale concert, where Midori will solo with the Asheville Symphony. There is really something for everyone in the Asheville Amadeus festival, and we would't have it any other way.”

Thomas Wolfe Auditorium will be transformed for the Asheville Amadeus finale concert with a 30-foot stage extension that will thrust the Asheville Symphony into the midst of the audience, with as many as 124 seats available onstage. Highland Brewing Company will host a free, family-friendly fesBval kickoff party at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 10, which will include the release of Wolfgang 1756, a commemoraBve Vienna-style lager brewed for the festival, and music by Mag Townsend, who is one of the arBsts featured on the Asheville Symphony Sessions album.

Asheville Amadeus officially opens on Saturday, March 11, with “brilliant” (Vanity Fair) musical comedy duo Igudesman & Joo performing their madcap romp And Now Mozart at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Diana Wortham Theatre.

Likened to Victor Borge and the Marx Brothers, violinist Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Hyung-Ki Joo are an inventive comic duo whose mix of music, pop culture and zaniness has won them fans worldwide. The 2017 festival also includes the release of the Asheville Symphony’s latest recording project with Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. The album, MozarAsAc, is a family-style hip-hop take on the story of a young Mozart’s tour through Europe where his legend took root. It features musicians of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, pianist Orion Weiss, and DJ Marley Carroll.

MozarAsAc will be available in early March for streaming and digital download on 150 digital media outlets including iTunes, Apple Music, SpoBfy, Google Play, Pandora, and more. CD copies are available for sale via the Asheville Symphony website (ashevillesymphony.org) and will be available to purchase during the fesBval. Secret Agent 23 Skidoo will perform an album release show for MozarAsAc at The Orange Peel on Sunday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. (Bckets available via theorangepeel.net).

Asheville Amadeus debuted in March 2015 with pianist Emanuel Ax. Over 20,000 people agended dozens of events in multiple venues during Asheville Amadeus 2015.

Hike Mingus Creek and experience the Smokies behind the scenes

Friends of the Smokies’ 2017 Classic Hike Series kicks off on Tuesday, March 14th with a hike at Mingus Creek. Hikers will trek four miles round-trip to see a historic cemetery with Danny Bernstein, creator of the Classic Hike Series, and have the opportunity to tour the Mountain Farm Museum. The Mingus Creek hike marks the beginning of Friends of the Smokies’ monthly guided hikes, which run March through December each year.

“I'm excited about taking hikers to the Mingus Creek area. Though the hike is short, it will introduce new people to our Classic Hikes, so that they feel comfortable to come back for the whole series. For experienced hikers, I hope they will come to discover the Mingus Family Cemetery and help me figure out a mystery on the trail,” says hike leader Danny Bernstein.

After hiking participants will enjoy their lunches on the porch of Oconaluftee Visitor Center, then take a private ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour of the Mountain Farm Museum. The Mountain Farm Museum features a historic house, barn, apple house, springhouse, and smokehouse, offering a glimpse of how people lived 100 years ago and demonstrating historic gardening and agricultural practices. Meeting locations for the daylong excursion will be in Asheville, Waynesville, and at the trailhead.

Visit Hike.FriendsoftheSmokies.org to register for any Classic Hike of the Smokies. Monthly guided day hikes in the Classic Hike Series are $20 for members. New and renewing members may join Friends of the Smokies and hike for $35. A discounted whole-series rate is available until March 14th. Mail a $160 check to 160 S. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or register online for March through November and receive December free. Donations benefit Friends of the Smokies Trails Forever program, which supports trail rehabilitation in GSMNP.
