Malaprop's to host award-winning book critic Maureen Corrigan - Nov. 19th

Award-winning book critic (NPR’s Fresh Air and The Washington Post) and professor Maureen Corrigan will share her bookish obsession with a great American novel in So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to be and Why it Endures at Malaprop's on November 19 at 7 p.m.

A ticket to the event is free with each purchase of So We Read On.

“Maureen Corrigan has produced a minor miracle: a book about The Great Gatsby that stands up to Gatsby itself.”
—Michael Cunningham

“Corrigan’s research was as intrepid as her analysis is ardent and expert, and she brings fact, thought, feelings, and personal experiences together in a buoyant, illuminating, and affecting narrative about one depthless novel, the transforming art of reading, and the endless tides that tumble together life and literature.”
—Booklist (starred review)

“Corrigan…[is] right on the case, turning up fascinating and sometimes-controversial gems.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“I am loving [Gastby] all over again as I read her wonderful, humane, and keen observations.”
—Library Journal

“We have to be thankful to Maureen Corrigan for letting us in on her intriguing love affairs with great books, as in this wonderful account of her grand passion.”
—Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran and The Republic of Imagination

“Forget great. The Great Gatsby is the greatest—even if you didn’t think so when you had to read it in high school. I didn’t think so back then either.” So begins SO WE READ ON (Little, Brown; September 9, 2014), Maureen Corrigan’s irresistibly engaging, acutely insightful examination of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece—“the Great American Novel we think we’ve read but probably haven’t.”

Conceived nearly a century ago by a man who died believing himself a failure, The Great Gatsby is now universally revered, and reading it is a rite of passage for millions. But how well do we really know this beloved classic? As Fresh Air critic, Georgetown professor, and Gatsby lover extraordinaire Corrigan adeptly points out, while Fitzgerald’s masterpiece may be one of the most popular novels in America, many of us first read it when we were too young to fully comprehend its power.

With SO WE READ ON, Corrigan offers a fresh perspective on what makes Gatsby great—and utterly unusual—juxtaposing a close reading of the text with a fascinating investigation of Fitzgerald’s personal history, his relationships, and his possible motivations for narrative choices. Readers will delight in joining Corrigan on a journey to rediscover the worlds of West and East Egg—from high school classrooms to a fact-finding mission on Long Island Sound, from Corrigan’s childhood home in Queens, New York, to her trek across the country teaching a Great Books course on this great(est) of American novels.

From her stunningly clear interpretations of the imagery throughout the book (hint: the most pervasive symbol in Gatsby is not what you think it is), to her thought-provoking observations about Gatsby’s commentaries on race, class, and gender, Corrigan offers a newly captivating take on this well-known story. With rigor, wit, and infectious enthusiasm, Corrigan inspires us to reexperience the greatness of Gatsby and cuts to the heart of why we are, as a culture, “borne back ceaselessly” into its thrall.

Frugal Backpacker offers a diverse selection of clothes for the Asheville lifestyle, as well as specialty gear for hiking and camping.

“We are excited about the new location and how convenient it will be for everyone in and around Asheville to stop by for their favorite brands like Patagonia, Columbia and Mountain Hardwear,” said Frugal Backpacker’s Marketing Director Sarah Merrell. “New choices in selection change weekly as sample sales unfold,” Merrell explained. “Our selection of quality outdoor fashion and gear at these prices is unbeatable in the area.”

The location is ideal for other reasons too. A visitor to town can buy a warmer jacket at Frugal and be on the Blue Ridge Parkway within ten minutes. Locals who have their camping trips planned months ahead, can now be on the hunt for deals more frequently.

Mission Hospital receives "Get With the Guidelines-Stroke GOLD Plus" achievement award

Mission Hospital has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke GOLD-Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The recognition demonstrates Mission Hospital’s commitment to quality care for stroke patients.  Mission Hospital also received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll recognition for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-buster tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

“Here in western North Carolina, we live in the Stroke Belt. That means our community is at a higher risk and stroke remains the third most common cause of death and leading cause of disability among adults,” said Jonathan Bailey, Vice President of Operations for Mission Hospital. “Mission Health offers a carefully coordinated stroke recovery and prevention program to ensure that patients receive the latest evidence-based treatment. This recognition is a result of our commitment to our patients, and to our community.”
The Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program combines the expertise of the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping hospital care teams ensure that the care provided to stroke patients is aligned with the latest evidence-based guidelines. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures improves the quality of care for stroke patients, saves lives and reduces healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of strokes.
“We are pleased to recognize Mission Hospital for their commitment and dedication to stroke care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce patients’ length of stays and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparity gaps in care.”
Mission Hospital has received this national recognition multiple times.  To see the full list of recognized hospitals nationwide or for more information about the Get With The Guidelines programs from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, visit www.heart.org./quality
