Habitat's Women Build Team celebrates home's completion: Key Passing Ceremony - July 9th

On Tuesday, July 9th at 5:30pm, Jennifer Bostick and her two daughters will finally have their house keys in hand six months—and 200 sweat equity hours— since the first wall went up. Theirs is the 21st of 22 total Habitat homes to be built in Habitat’s Carney Place neighborhood in West Asheville. The media and public are invited to attend the event.

This is the 8th Women Build house built by Asheville Area Habitat. Women Build is Habitat for Humanity's program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. The house is mostly built by female volunteers and construction supervisors. A team of women comprise the Women Build advocacy team (WOMbats) for the house, and the major sponsors are also female business owners and individuals. The purpose of Women Build is not to exclude men, but to focus on including women in the home building process.

This year, the WOMbats focused on a “prayer flag” theme. Over the course of the six months it took to build the house, volunteers, donors, event attendees, and others drew on and sewed small flags with warm wishes, blessings, and messages of congratulations. The key passing ceremony will incorporate these flags as a symbol of the community’s support for the Bostick family and their new home.
