Habitat and The Home Depot Foundation partner to repair homes with veterans and their families

Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has received a Community Impact Grant from The Home Depot Foundation to help low-income veterans make much-needed repairs to their homes. Statistics show that many veterans face severe housing needs, sometimes because of a disability from combat injuries or because they’ve been particularly hard hit by the economy, and sometimes because they simply can’t find affordable housing. Nine million veterans are senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes, and approximately 1.4 million veterans live in poverty.

Through grant dollars and volunteer projects, The Home Depot Foundation partners with thousands of nonprofit organizations across the country to address the housing needs of veterans and to leave a lasting impact on local communities and has committed $80 million over five years to ensure that every veteran has a safe place to call home.

Asheville Area Habitat is currently seeking veterans who may be eligible for this program. For local program and qualification information, please call 828.251.5702. Repairs may range from roofing, electrical, caulking and weather stripping, to installing wheelchair ramps and remodeling bathrooms for accessibility.

Like the homeownership program, the home repair program relies heavily on community volunteers. To learn about volunteering on a home repair project, visit ashevillehabitat.org. Where possible, Asheville Area Habitat will utilize volunteer labor from local veterans groups for Community Impact Grant projects.

“We are excited to participate in The Home Depot Foundation’s Community Impact Program and we are grateful for their funding,” said Kit Rains, Development Director for Asheville Area Habitat.
