ALEXANDRA DUNCAN BOOK LAUNCH

Local author Alexandra Duncan celebrates the publication of Salvage, her first novel, with us! A librarian with a penchant for writing feminism into her stories, her work has been published in several Year's Best Science Fiction & Fantasy anthologies. Kirkus Reviews says of Salvage, "Haunting, colorful environments distinguish this debut novel about a girl fighting for survival in the far future." Please join us for a reading, signing, some chai, and a general good time!

Learn about the Enneagram System as panels of Enneagram types speak to their experience of their particular personality style. Certified Enneagram consultant Sandra Smith introduces basic concepts of the Enneagram and explores the gifts and challenges of each type.

BREATHING ROOM: SPIRITUAL DECLUTTERING WITH LAUREN ROSENFELD

Local author, educator, speaker, and spiritual intuitive Lauren Rosenfeld discusses her new book, Breathing Room: Open Your Heart By Decluttering Your Home, which she co-authored with Dr. Melva Green. Dr. Green is a psychiatrist who has been featured expert on the TV show "Hoarders". Rosenfeld will share the 10 principles of spiritual decluttering and offer a demonstration of activities we can all do to open up our space and our hearts. She is also the co-author of Your To Be List, of which Dr. Joan Borysenko said, "A lot of books are advertised as life-transforming, but this one actually is."

Young adult authors Jessica Spotswood, Megan Shepherd, Alexandra Duncan, and Tiffany Trent join us for this exciting event. Their books cover many New Worlds through steampunk,
alternate history, dystopian, and historical fantasy, but all have a strong sense of place. Jessica Spotswood is the author of The Cahill Witch Chronicles: Born Wicked, Star Cursed, and Sister's Fate (due out in August 2014!). Asheville author Megan Shepherd is the author of The Madman's Daughter and Her Dark Curiosity. Local author Alexandra Duncan, fresh off her book launch, is the author of Salvage. Tiffany Trent is the author of The Unnaturalists and The Tinker King.

SHEILA TURNAGE READING & SIGNING

North Carolina author Sheila Turnage brings back Mo and Dale from Three Times Lucky in her latest, The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing. Three Times Lucky won a Newbery Honor Award and was a Newsday Top 12 Children's Books of 2012 pick. Newsday said, "An irresistible narrator--a literary descendant of Scout Finch." WRITING CHARACTER-BASED CONFLICT: DESIRE FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH AMY WILLOUGHBY-BURLE

Local author and editor Amy Willoughby-Burle leads this free workshop. Whether from the front seat or the back, what your characters "want" drives your story. This workshop will help you discover your characters' hidden motives and how getting to know your characters better can uncover potential conflict from within. Using a series of guided exercises and writing time, you will learn how to create the most powerful conflict of all--that which already lies deep within your character.

CELEBRATING BULGARIAN WRITERS: VIRGINIA ZAHARIEVA & ALBENA STAMBOLOVA IN CONVERSATION WITH ELIZABETH KOSTOVA

We are pleased to welcome Virginia Zaharieva, author of Nine Rabbits, and Albena Stambolova, author of Everything Happens as it Does, for a celebration of Bulgarian writers. Nine Rabbits is among the most celebrated Bulgarian books to appear over the past two decades and the first of Zaharieva's work made available in North America. Everything Happens as it Does won the 2012 Elizabeth Kostova Foundation Contemporary Bulgarian Writers Contest. The event is co-sponsored by Black Balloon Publishing, Open Letter Books, and the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation, which was established to support contemporary Bulgarian literature and to foster exchange between Bulgarian writers and the Anglophone world.

This free workshop will use elements from the AWA method described in Writing Alone and With Others by Pat Schneider. Annie will write along with the group to create a safe, honest, and non-hierarchical space for new work. Accomplished and beginning writers learn from one another in a generous atmosphere of both critical craft and personal respect for the value of every voice.

In Queen Elizabeth's Daughter, North Carolina author Anne Clinard Barnhill explores the Elizabethan court and the choices available to the Queen's favorite ward, Mary Shelton. She is also the author of At the Mercy of the Queen, which Library Journal called "a stunningly engrossing and fast read" in a starred review. Anne will discuss the new novel while her son, Jason Smith, discusses magic in the book and offers a little actual magic, too! Please note the time for this event.

Our incredible local writer, blogger, bookclub leader, author interviewer, and role model Patti Digh joins us to discuss her latest book The Geography of Loss. The author of Life is a Verb, Creative is a Verb, Four Word Self Help, and What I Wish for You, Digh travels the U.S. and the world teaching others about mindfulness. This event will be live-streamed, so even if you can't be in the Malaprop's café with us, you can still be here! Live-stream audience members will be able to ask questions and get books signed and personalized to be shipped out after the event.
