Uncle Vanya,
the classic drama by Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) is scheduled for three matinee
performances by The Autumn Players of Asheville Community Theatre: Friday and
Saturday, November 9 and 10, at 35below, and Sunday, November 11, in the
Manheimer Room at Reuter
Center on the campus of
UNC-Asheville.
Adapted by Brian Friel
and directed by Anita Chapman, this thoughtful, compassionate, and humorous study
of a family in czarist Russia is the
second of five productions of the 2012-13 season of Readers Theater Showcase.
Curtain is at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $5 cashat the door.
Set at the turn of the twentieth
century, this tragicomic portrait of life on a country estate reaches deeply
into the heart of human experience. Caught in a web of misunderstandings,
jealousies and affections, members of an extended family struggle to face their
disappointments and missed opportunities and to meet the future with courage
and hope.
Director Anita Chapman is currently
Chair of The Autumn Players. She has appeared in the Readers Theater
Showcase productions of A Man for All Seasons, The Heiress, and The
Shadow Box, and has directed The Trip to Bountiful, The
Little Foxes, and A Delicate Balance. Formerly English
Department Chair of the American International School of The Hague, Ms. Chapman
has a graduate degree in Dramaturgy from the University of Amsterdam.
The Autumn Players is Asheville
Community Theatre's volunteer outreach company consisting of dozens of seasoned
actors, directors, writers, and event organizers dedicated to taking theatre
into the community. Celebrating their 20th Anniversary, this company has
provided entertainment, enrichment, and education for thousands of students,
seniors, and in-betweens at venues within an hour or more from Asheville.
