Directed by Jim Reid and in partnership
with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville, this is the first
of five productions of the 2016-17 season of The Autumn Players’ Readers
Theatre Showcase. Auditions are Tuesday October 11, 2016 from 10:30 until 2:30
in 35blow and are open to the community. Rehearsals are at the same time and
place on October 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27.
Much has changed and much hasn’t since The
Young Man From Atlanta was first performed in 1995. Will Kidder, the 64
year-old patriarch of a Texas family has just been fired by his long-time employer.
Cash strapped as he is, he discovers that his wife, Lily Dale, has been sending
money to the close Atlanta-based friend of their son Bill, recently dead --
apparently a suicide. The unnamed issue that pervades this play is the nature
of the relationship between Bill and his Atlanta friend and the effect it has
had on Will and his relationship to his son.
Jim Reid took up the thespian arts just
before retirement and has shifted from full-stage productions to work with The
Autumn Players. He currently serves as its Chair and has played in and directed
many of its shows. Most recently he played Arnold in The Circle and directed
Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners.
The Autumn Players is ACT's
volunteer outreach group consisting of over 100 seasoned actors writers and
educators dedicated to taking theatre into the community. Since 1992 the
company has provided entertainment, enrichment and instruction for thousands of
students, seniors, and in-betweens at venues within an hour or more from
Asheville.
