UNC Asheville student artists holds silent auction to benefit Christine W. Avery Learning Center

UNC Asheville will hold a silent auction to benefit the Christine W. Avery Learning Center Inc. (CWA), an organization based at Hill Street Baptist Church in Asheville serving students of all backgrounds in Buncombe County, beginning with an opening reception at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the lobby of Karpen Hall on campus. The auction, organized by UNC Asheville student and artist Emily Powell, will remain open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

The auction will feature Powell’s own glass art and the works of other local artists, as well as items such as merchandise from the UNC Asheville bookstore and gift cards to local restaurants. All funds raised will be donated to CWA, which offers a variety of school-aged programs that focus on academic enrichment, social development, recreational activities and visual and performing arts.

“I'm excited about this auction because
it will help with both community awareness and funds for the great work that CWA is doing,” said Powell, who became involved with CWA through an Honors course at UNC Asheville. “It's raising awareness for the work that the CWA does and how beneficial they are to the kids and families of Buncombe County. It also will help give more children the opportunity to receive after-school care and tutoring, even if the families can't afford it.”
