Intermediate/advanced watercolor workshops with Ann Vasilik

A-B Tech is hosting their Visiting Artist Summer Workshop Series, and welcomes local artist Ann Vasilik for two workshop opportunities. 

ANN VASILIK has lived in Asheville since 1988. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Philadelphia College of Art. In Virginia, California, Hawaii, North Carolina and the Republic of the Philippines Ann has worked as a painter, illustrator and teacher. She has had numerous shows and received many awards and commissions. Her work is contained in private and corporate collections.

The focus of these classes is on seeing values, painting with purpose and putting it down simply. Class notes, still life setups and critiques are provided along with individual guidance.

Workshop One: July 9 & 10
Time: 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break
Workshop Cost: $190.00 (will include lunch)
OR both workshops for $350.00.

Day 1: Introduction to the “3 wash/four value” technique
painting a simple object with the emphasis on composition
and design.


Day 2: Applying the “3 wash/four value” lesson to a
landscape subject.
 

Workshop Two: July 16 & 17
Time: 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break
Workshop Cost: $190.00 (will include lunch)
OR $both workshops for $350.00.

Day 1: Further development of the “3 wash/four value” with
an architectural subject with a focus on “center of interest”.


Day 2: Water and Reflections. Students may bring their own
resource materials to use (with Ann’s approval) if they wish.
Focus of the class is on seeing values, painting
with purpose and putting it down simply. Class
notes, still life setups and critiques are provided
along with individual guidance.



Materials List (the following materials will need to be brought to the workshop on the first day)
Drawing: Sketchbook, lead pencils - soft (2B),
eraser (Kneaded)
Painting: Paper - Ann uses D’Arches 140 lb. cold
pressed, but any good quality rag paper will do.
Ann stretches her paper on a piece of Homasote
board (or sound board, a recycled 1/2 inch
cardboard-like substance) available from some
lumber stores in 4’ x 8’ sheets.
Brushes: 2” wash (sky brush), 1”,1/2” 1/4” flats,
assorted rounds, and a rigger or liner.
Paints: Ann uses mainly Winsor Newton in the 14
ml. studio tubes. The 5 ml. tubes are fine for the
workshop.
Reds: Burnt Sienna, Permanent Rose, Alizarin, and
a bright red (Scarlet, Cad, etc.).
Yellows: Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Lemon Yellow,
Transparent Yellow, Gamboge.
Blues: French Ultra Marine, Cobalt Turquoise,
Cobalt,
Peacock (Holbein), Blue of Grey (Holbein).
Others: Winsor Violet, Cadmium Orange, Paynes
Grey.


Miscellaneous: Two water tubs, Sponges (Natural
and household), Palette with good mixing areas
If stretching paper, the following: office stapler
and staples, board for stretching paper, bath towel,
spray bottle, Kleenex, single-edge razor blade.


*Ann will provide photos and full scale drawing of her demonstration painting ahead of the class for student use, if needed.
