Event takes place Sept. 26 at The Collider in downtown Asheville,
open to the public
Climate change affects not just our planet but the people who live on it. From increases in the risk for illnesses such as Zika, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus, to extreme weather events resulting in agricultural shortfalls – thereby, problems for the world’s food supply – there is ample evidence that climate change can impact human health.
Such
impacts will be the topic of discussion at a free lecture on Monday, Sept. 26,
6 - 7 p.m., led by physician Alan H. Lockwood, author of the book, Heath
Advisory: Protecting Health on a Warming Planet. The event will take place
at The Collider, 1 Haywood St., in downtown Asheville.
In
his book, Dr. Lockwood draws on peer-reviewed scientific and medical
research to detail the symptoms of climate change and their medical side
effects. In addition to discussing the health consequences of a changing
climate, Dr. Lockwood will address what people will need to do to adapt to a
warmer environment. After the lecture, he will be available to sign copies of his
book, which will be offered for sale throughout the evening by Malaprop’s
Bookstore.
This
lecture is open to the public and doors open at 5:15 p.m. for light
refreshments. The event is free, but donations are accepted. The event is
sponsored by the Western North Carolina Chapter of Physicians for Social
Responsibility and The Collider, both nonprofit organizations, with additional
support from Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC).
The
Collider is located on the newly renovated top floor of the Wells Fargo
building, across from Pritchard Park. After the bank closes at 5 p.m., access
to The Collider will be through the glass door facing Patton Avenue, directly
across the street from the former S&W Cafeteria (just a couple of steps
around the corner from the bank’s ATM machine). There will be someone by the
door to let in attendees until just past 6 p.m.
Alan
H. Lockwood, M.D., is Emeritus Professor of Neurology and Nuclear Medicine in
the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at
Buffalo and a senior scientist at Physicians for Social Responsibility. To
