Hundreds attend leadership and dyslexia community forum

An audience of nearly 400 people attended the Key Learning Center at Carolina Day School’s free community forum “Leadership and Dyslexia featuring Tommy Spaulding” at the Crowne Plaza Resort Expo Center on November 10, 2015. World-renowned inspirational speaker and author, Tommy Spaulding, shared his powerful message about true leadership, empowerment, and the impact dyslexia has had on his life.

"Someone believed in me, and it changed my life," said Tommy Spaulding. "Dyslexia is the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”

Following Spaulding’s keynote address, the community shared in a panel discussion with educational experts, parents, and students whose lives are touched by dyslexia. Experts shared helpful information and parents and students discussed their own experiences and answered questions from the audience.

“The more you explore, the more you will find,” said Carolina Day School senior Annie Dephouse, a graduate of Key School at Carolina Day, when asked her advice for students with dyslexia.

The public community forum was designed to help educate, encourage, and inspire individuals who struggle with the language-based learning difference of dyslexia or who work with students who do and to bring a message of empowerment and inspiration.

“We want people to know there is hope in overcoming academic challenges with a dyslexic mind, and we want to connect people at this event with the resources and organizations to help them do just that,” said Catherine Gay, Key School parent organizer and mother of a child with dyslexia.

Key School at Carolina Day School’s approach to learning transforms students with language-based learning differences into high achievers and confident, capable learners.
