CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK!
Monday, May 1 - 8
2017 marks the 98th anniversary of this weeklong celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes — wherever young readers and books connect! Check out our awesome events for teens and tweens this week!

Thursday, May 4 at 7 pm Star Wars costume contest with prizes!
BETH REVIS presents STAR WARS: REBEL RISING *
Local author, Beth Revis, joins us for her latest book Star Wars: Rebel Rising, which will visit a period in time mentioned in Rogue One. We know Saw Gerrera picked Jyn up from Lah’mu after Director Krennic and the Empire killed her mother and took her father. Saw taught Jyn to be a rebel, but after a betrayal, she’ll have to fight for herself. We will have a Star Wars costume contest with prizes, too!

Children’s Literature Trivia Night*
In what year was Charlotte’s Web published? Who wrote Where the WIld Things Are? Where did Hermione Grainger get her Time Turner? If you can answer these questions, you may have what it takes to win our Children’s Book Week Kid Lit Trivia Contest! Readers both young and young-at-heart are invited to eat cupcakes, compete for bookish prizes, battle for bragging rights and the coveted  Children’s Book Week Trivia Trophy.

AMY CHERRIX presents EYE OF THE STORM: NASA, DRONES & THE RACE TO CRACK THE HURRICANE CODE*
Local author and Malaprop’s children’s book buyer, Amy Cherrix, is launching her latest book on hurricanes! In the United States alone, ten million Americans live in hurricane danger zones. But how do hurricanes work? A daring group of NASA scientists are using a high-tech drone and a former Top Gun pilot to find out! This latest title in a long-running series looks at cutting-edge meteorological research with implications for the billions of people around the world who live in the paths of tropical cyclones.

Middle grade and Young Adult Fan Party*
Spend an afternoon with a panel of your favorite local middle grade and young adult authors to kick off Malaprop’s new free book program for teens and tweens. First Reads gives a free book to young readers in exchange for a short 100-word review. Mix and mingle with your favorite local authors and hear why reviews matter so much in children’s and young adult publishing. Come for the fun, stay for the cupcakes and door prizes!

ROSE SENEHI presents CAROLINA BELL
Popular local author Rose Senehi will read from her latest novel Carolina Belle, which introduces us to apple orchardists starting a cidery. According to Rose’s website, “Read this novel and you’ll never look at an apple same way again.” We’ll find out why when we meet her!

Troy Ball serves readers a Mason jar of a memoir in Pure Heart. Her new book is the story of how a pearl-wearing Southern woman in her forties who is a devoted full-time mother of two developmentally-challenged sons moved to Asheville and became the country’s foremost legal distiller of traditional Appalachian moonshine. She'll be serving free samples of her hooch.

A fast-growing global movement, No Meat Athlete (NMA), encourages folks to be healthier and fitter on whole plant foods. Written by NMA founder Matt Frazier and longtime health coach, yoga teacher, and nutrition writer Stepfanie Romine, the cookbook features 150 whole food, vegan recipes. Heather Crosby’s cookbook says you can find the “yum” via improvisational cooking based on what’s in your pantry. Just find a protein, a grain and something aromatic.
