Attic Salt Theatre Company, the team who produced the comedy hit All in the Timing this past March at North
Carolina Stage Company and
2015’s acclaimed Vanya
and Sonia and Masha and Spike at 35below, among many other hit
plays, is pleased to
announce open auditions for the Pulitzer Prize winning drama How I Learned to Drive, at 35below in Downtown Asheville. 35below is
located at 35 East Walnut Street in the back of Asheville Community
Theatre. Auditions will be
held from 3 to 6pm on
the 10th and from 6 to 9pm 11th
of July, with callbacks being held in the same venue from 6 to 9pm on July 13th
The company is seeking
3 female and 2 male
actors of any type and race, who fit a role in the following breakdown:
Li’l Bit – Female, 30s/40s, a strong woman recounting a
tumultuous adolescence. Must play from 11-18 y.o. in tone, if not in voice.
Peck – Male, 40s, South Carolina
accent, but NOT a stereotype. An attractive, gentle man with issues of his own.
Male Geek Chorus – 30s-40s,
Plays Grandfather, Waiter, High-school Boys, et. al.
Female Geek Chorus – 30s-40s, Plays Mother, Aunt Mary, High-school
Girls, et. al.
Young Geek Chorus – Female, 20s, Plays Grandmother, High-school
Girls, the voice of 11 y.o. Li’l Bit, et. al.
This show is a
real showcase for five strong
actors who would be comfortable with the adult and sexual themes of the
play. The play will be
presented at 35below and
pay will be a percentage of the box office.
Those auditioning
should bring a headshot and resume (if they have one) and be prepared to
read monologues and/or sides from the play, which will be provided at the audition.
The play is
slated to be directed by
Jeff Catanese and will rehearse evenings throughout September and October, with
nightly rehearsals required from November 1st until opening on the 4th. The play runs from November 4th through the 20th,
with performances Fridays and
Saturdays at 7:30pm, and
Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. There may be additional performances on Thursdays during the run, as well as the possibility of an
extension during the first weekend of December.

interested parties can contact the Asheville community Theatre box office at

Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, How I Learned to Drive is one of the most lauded and
beloved off-Broadway
plays of the last twenty years, also winning the 1997 Obie, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel
awards, among many others. In
it, the older Li’l Bit recounts her teenage years, when she was sexually
pursued by her Aunt’s husband, Peck. Using the metaphor of driving and the
issues of pedophilia, incest, and misogyny, the play explores the
ideas of control and manipulation in a very deft and adult way.
