ERIK LARS MYERS AND SARAH FICKE READING & SIGNING 

The authors of North Carolina Craft Beer & Breweries will be joining us for a lively discussion and beer tasting. Erik and Sarah celebrate the publication of the book’s 2nd edition, which has been updated to profile over 140 NC breweries! Reviewers have called it “an indispensable regional beer handbook.” Erik is the president of the NC Craft Brewers Guild and started Mystery Brewing in Hillsborough, NC.

DANE HUCKELBRIDGE READING & SIGNING 

Dane Huckelbridge’s new book, The United States of Beer, is an entertaining, irreverent, and informative look at how beer shaped this country’s history. It traces the history of beer from Native American alcoholic drinks to the first US brewery, the first macrobrew revolution, Prohibition, and, finally, the rise of craft beer. Dane is the author of Bourbon: A History of the American Spirit. We will have beer on hand for this event!

ESTHER SMITH DEMO & DISCUSSION

Esther Smith will join us for a fun-filled hands-on workshop! Esther is the author of Making Books with Kids, a delightful source of activities that will engage kids in craft projects as they create their own books, with sections that focus on design, illustration, binding techniques, and more. Judi Kauffman of Scrapbooking.com Magazine raves that this book is sure to join Esther’s earlier work, How to Make Books, as “one of the best in its category [of] book making.” Esther creates limited edition and artists’ books with Purgatory Press. Her works have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Whitney Museum, and more!

BETH REVIS LAUNCH PARTY

We are celebrating the publication of local author Beth Revis’ new book, A World Without You! Protagonist Bo, who struggles with mental illness, also believes he can time travel. A trip gone wrong causes him to lose his girlfriend Sofia in the year 1692, where she is threatened with death by the Puritan colony that finds her.  As clues point to what’s actually happening with Bo and Sofia, the sense of tragedy mounts. Publishers Weekly calls it “a story that is both heartbreaking and hopeful.” Beth is the author of the New York Times’ bestselling Across the Universe series.

WILL FREY READING & SIGNING

Will Frey joins us with his new book Ease Into Freedom, a practical and illuminating guide to relieving stress. Will is a teacher of mindfulness-based stress reduction in the Program on Integrative Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill. The book offers tips on everything from breath to sitting postures and time management. Rob Kramer, author of Stealth Coaching, calls the book “a gentle yet powerful companion to keep on your desk or your bedside.”

ERICA WESTLY READING & SIGNING

Erica Westly joins us for her new book, Fastpitch, a history of softball that Library Journal hails as “a fast-paced journey through an original American sport . . . [that] will give all readers a sense of nostalgia.” This well-researched book is an exploration of the sport’s invention and its evolution. Erica examines softball’s importance in the fight for gender equality and more. She is a journalist whose work has been published in The New York Times, Scientific American, and Esquire, among others.

SHARED WORLDS with JEFF VANDERMEER, ANN VANDERMEER, LEAH THOMAS, THOMAS OLDE HEUVALT, TERRA McVOY, JULIA ELLIOTT, TOBIAS BUCKELL, and NATHAN BALLINGRUD

We're excited to host an afternoon of readings from the instructors of Wofford College's Shared Worlds program, a murderer's row of sci-fi, fantasy and weird fiction. MC'd by Shared Worlds founder Jeremy L.C. Jones, this event will feature authors Jeff VanderMeer, Ann VanderMeer, Asheville's Nathan Ballingrud, Tobias Buckell, Julia Elliott, Terra McVoy, Thomas Olde Heuvelt and Leah Thomas, who will each be reading from their personal favorite passages for an event that promises to be strange, fast-paced and even a little competitive. Now in its ninth year, Shared Worlds is an interdisciplinary program for middle and high school students that emphasizes problem solving, collaborative creation, and experiential learning through the exploration of speculative fiction genres.

HARRY POTTER LAUNCH PARTY and BOOK RELEASE @ 12 MIDNIGHT!

Join us for a night of Potter-mania that will culminate in the release of the newest publication in the beloved Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! In this installment, the now grown Harry has to face the darkness of his past, and his youngest son Albus wrestles with his family’s history.  This is the first official Harry Potter tale that will be presented on stage, and it will premiere in London on July 30. We’ll celebrate all things Potter at the store with costumes, refreshments, and fun!
