NAMI WC is currently seeking experienced
professionals to speak at monthly chapter meetings. This opportunity allows
professionals to get their name out into the community. Please see below for more information.
---
NAMI meetings are held on the
second Wednesday of every month from 6-7pm at the Central United Methodist
Church in downtown Asheville (27 Church Street). Though speaker positions are filling up
quickly, there are still slots available for the following dates in 2015: August 12, October 14, November 11, and
December 9.
Speakers have the freedom to
choose their own topic, as long as it falls under the umbrella of “living with
mental illness”. Usually speakers
discuss something to do with their specialty/interest area, as long as the topic is not too clinically
focused. Topics must be approved by the NAMI board of directors in advance.
Interested professionals should
contact Allyson Frick at apfrick1@catamount.wcu.edu. Please include “NAMI” in the
subject line.
NAMI Western Carolina Mission
NAMI
Western Carolina is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness,
the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to
improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI
recognizes that the key concepts of recovery, resiliency and support are
essential to improving the wellness and quality of life of all persons affected
by mental illness. Mental illnesses should not be an obstacle to a full,
meaningful life. The purposes of the affiliate are to (1) provide support to
family members and peers, (2) serve as a center for the collection and
dissemination of information about mental illness, (3) foster public education,
(4) develop coping skills for families and peers, (5) advocate and (6) aid community
support services.
Support, Education and Advocacy
From
its inception in 1979, NAMI has been dedicated to improving the lives of
individuals and families affected by mental illness, establishing a role as the
most formidable grassroots mental health advocacy organization in the country.
Dedication, steadfast commitment, and unceasing belief in NAMI’s mission by
grassroots advocates have produced profound changes. NAMI’s greatest strength
is the dedication of its leaders and members – the families, friends and
individuals that serve to strengthen communities across the country.
Due
in large part to generous individual, corporate, and foundation donations, NAMI
is able to build on its success and continue to focus on three cornerstones of
activity that offer hope, reform, and health to our American community:
Awareness, Education, and Advocacy. Financial contributions allow NAMI to offer
an array of programs, initiatives, and activities in support of the NAMI
mission.
